SDG 15: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss
Goal 15 targets
- In accordance with commitments under international agreements, guarantee the preservation, restoration, and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems and their services by 2020, with a focus on forests, wetlands, mountains, and drylands.
- Encourage the adoption of sustainable forest management practices for all forest types by 2020, stop deforestation, repair degraded forests, and significantly boost afforestation and reforestation worldwide.
- Fight desertification, rehabilitate degraded land and soil, especially land impacted by drought, floods, and desertification, and work toward a world free of land degradation by 2030.
- Make sure that mountain habitats, including their biodiversity, are conserved by 2030 in order to increase their ability to deliver advantages that are critical to sustainable development.
- Take immediate and substantial action to stop biodiversity loss, lessen habitat degradation, and save threatened species from extinction by 2020.
- Encourage adequate access to genetic resources and the just and equitable distribution of benefits resulting from their use, as agreed upon globally.
- Address the supply and demand for illicit wildlife items and take immediate steps to prevent poaching and trafficking of protected plant and animal species.
- By 2020, implement strategies to stop the spread of invasive alien species, drastically lessen their negative effects on land and aquatic ecosystems, and manage or eliminate priority species.
- By 2020, include the values of ecosystems and biodiversity into local and national planning, development, and poverty alleviation plans and accounts.
- Gather and greatly expand financial resources from all sources to preserve and utilize ecosystems and biodiversity in a sustainable manner.
- Raise a sizable amount of money from all sources and at all levels to support sustainable forest management, and give developing nations sufficient incentives to promote it, particularly through conservation and reforestation.
- Strengthen international assistance for initiatives aimed at preventing the poaching and trafficking of protected species, particularly by empowering local communities to seek sustainable employment possibilities.
