The Amgen Scholars Program at Kyoto University is an immersive, eight-week research experience focused on science and biotechnology. Participants have the opportunity to engage in groundbreaking research within Kyoto University’s prestigious departments or interdisciplinary fields. Research placements are tailored to participants’ interests and the availability of specific labs.

Program Overview

Dates: June 6, 2025 – August 7, 2025
Participants: Approximately 10 students

Research Areas: Scholars will conduct research in one of the following disciplines:

  • Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Bioinformatics, and related fields
  • Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Immunology, Molecular Genetics
  • Microbiology, Molecular Medicine, Neuroscience, Pathology
  • Statistics, Toxicology, and other areas relevant to biotechnology and life sciences

Research Placements

Participants are matched with research labs based on their interests and lab availability. Each scholar will work full-time, dedicating around 40 hours per week to their project. Research guidance is provided by Kyoto University faculty, with additional support from graduate students and postdoctoral associates. This program offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research while fostering academic and professional growth

Educational Activities 

  • Seminars & Lab Visits: Engage in seminars and lab tours led by Kyoto University faculty, exploring current research and professional topics in science.
  • Poster Session: Showcase your research findings during the end-of-program poster session.

Eligibility Requirements: To apply, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be enrolled in a university in Asia that awards a bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  2. Have completed at least one year of undergraduate study by the start of the program.
  3. Plan to return to undergraduate studies after completing the program.
  4. Demonstrate strong academic performance and proficiency in English, as evidenced by:
    • TOEFL score of at least 72,
    • IELTS score of at least 5.5, or
    • An equivalent qualification.
  5. Express a clear interest in pursuing a Ph.D.

Financial Support

  • Travel Costs: Kyoto University covers round-trip economy-class airfare to and from Japan, based on a predetermined schedule and route.
  • Accommodation: Housing is arranged and paid for by Kyoto University (except for Kyoto University students).
  • Stipend: Scholars receive a stipend of 180,000 yen, paid in two installments.

Amgen Scholars Asia Symposium

Participation in the Amgen Scholars Asia Symposium, held at Kyoto University, is mandatory. This event serves as a platform for networking and collaboration among scholars.

Health & Liability Insurance

  • Scholars are required to arrange their own health insurance prior to arrival.
  • Upon arrival, enrollment in Kyoto University’s Co-op Liability Insurance is mandatory.

Program Requirements: Participants must:

  1. Comply with all travel and accommodation arrangements.
  2. Complete an eight-week research project.
  3. Fully engage in academic and social activities, including the Amgen Scholars Asia Symposium.
  4. Submit a research poster and provide program feedback at the conclusion of the program.

    • A Statement of Purpose outlining your lab preferences and proposed research project.
    • Two recommendation letters from academic referees.
    • An official academic transcript and proof of English proficiency.
  • Note: All documents must be submitted in PDF format, with individual file sizes not exceeding 3MB.

Visa Information

Successful applicants must have a valid passport and obtain the required visa(s) for entry into Japan. Kyoto University will provide guidance and assistance during the visa application process.
